El Paso, a border town across the way from one of the most dangerous cities in the world, Juarez, is apparently “safe” according to Beto. El Paso is one of the heaviest intervention cities for the DEA in the United States, so its “safety” is in question here, let alone its legitimacy because of illegal immigration, as Beto states.
Of course since he was kicking his campaign for President off in El Paso, he was going to praise the city to try to acquire at least some votes in Texas.
“With Ciudad Juarez we form the largest binational community in this hemisphere. And for 20 years running, we’ve been one of the safest cities in the United States of America,” Beto, who is from El Paso, said. “We are safe not despite the fact that we are a city of immigrants and asylum seekers. We are safe because we are a city of immigrants and asylum seekers.”
El Paso’s crime rates are notoriously low in general since most of the crime happens across the border in the Mexican Ciudad Juarez area, however, one can sit on their roof in El Paso and watch crime happen in Mexico. While it is “statistically safe” in terms of crime rate, El Paso is referred to as a massive drug hub for the entry of illegal narcotics entering the country, 99% of which go undetected passed the city.
Illegal immigration is also not as heavy in El Paso because of its formal port of entry, leaving many to cross the border illegally elsewhere. Again, however, their typically relocate to El Paso because of the easy crossing point back into Mexico, which can happen without verification.
The crowd that Beto spoke to was 92% white, according to data from Democrats.org.
